Information, Referral & Advocacy


ACCESS Social Services Department strives to be a resource by providing information, referral, and advocacy services to low income families.  Below is a listing of some of these services.

  • Department of Human Services (DHS) - Assistance with explanation of rules, regulations, and processes of the DHS; communication with DHS social workers to advocate on behalf of clients; and assistance with the completion of forms related to the following programs:
    • Family Independence Program (FIP)
    • State Disability Assistance (SDA)
    • Adult Medicaid Program (AMP)
    • State Emergency Relief (SER)
    • Food Assistance Benefits/Food Stamps (FAB)
    • Medical Assistance/Medicaid (MA) - Includes MIChild and Healthy Kids
    • Refugee Assistance Program (RAP) - Cash and/or Medical Aid
    • Repatriate Assistance Program (REP)
    • Child Development and Care (CDC)
    • Chore Services Program 
  • Medical - Assistance with completion of forms related to the World Medical Relief Program
  • Notary Public - Provision of notarization of documents
  • Passport Application (USA) - Assistance with completion of forms
  • Selective Service Registration (complete form - register)
  • Seniors Services -
    • Provision of referrals to Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA), The Senior Alliance and other senior service providers
    • Assistance with completion of "MiCafe" -  food assistance program forms
    • Social Security - Assistance with completion of retirement claim forms, and forms related to Medicare parts A, B and D - by state certified MMAP Counselors. 
  • Social Security Benefits - Assistance with completion of disability claim forms, social security supplemental income benefits (SSI), social security card applications, budget letters, correspondence, etc.
  • Unemployment Benefits - Through the Department of Labor and Economic Growth (DLEG), we assist in the process of filing for unemployment and follow-up with claims.  Services we offer include:
    • Unemployed worker's record of telephone calls to MARVIN for first time and bi-weekly unemployment claim certification
    • Request for name and/or address change
    • Protest (re)determination
    • Inquiry
    • Referral to Work-First Program
  • Utility Company - Contact to activate or de-activate service, change address, and review and explain bill
  • Other - Voter registration, "Self Declaration of Income" statement, US Passport
