Summer Academy

Program Goals
To provide each participant with an opportunity for fun and adventure in a safe and supervised program.
To encourage the development of the participant’s physical, academic, and social skills.
To create an environment that fosters opportunities for the child’s development in the areas of:

Physical/Health education: To develop knowledge and positive attitudes towards physical activity and fitness. Measurement tools: Questionnaires/surveys, camp counselors’ observation notes.

Literacy & Math skills: To improve overall literacy for students in grades K through 5th. Measurement tools: Standardized test scores (MEAPS, Terra Nova, MLP)

Character education: To build character through everyday leadership and guidance, and to improve youth's employability and leadership skills. Measurement tool: Pre- and post-tests, final work performance evaluation, and questionnaires/surveys

Program Objectives
-
One hundred and fifty students participate in an all-day summer program.

All students participate in Literacy focused activities.

All students participate in Math enrichment activities.
-
Eighty percent of the participants maintain an average attendance rate of 80% as measured by daily attendance records.

Twenty youth leaders actively participate in a 1-week leadership and employability skills training, on-the-job training and mentorship, and an opportunity for employment as a youth leader.

Program Sites Salina Elementary, Lapeer Park/Pool, ACCESS
Eligibility The program will target students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Priority will be given to at-risk students from low-income families.
Program Description During the A.M. session, students participate in 2 literacy sessions, 1 math session, and one physical activity. During the P.M. session, students rotate between 3 centers/activities each day. Students spend 40-45 minutes in each center/activity.
Students are assigned to groups based on grade level. A low staff-to-student ratio is maintained at all times, and does not exceed 1:7.
