A virtual session for exploring the process and magic of reading fortunes from coffee grounds, hosted by past AANM artist-in-residence Levon Kafafian. Together, we’ll walk through the process of making coffee for readings and workshop the ancestral tradition of speculative storytelling. Using images found in the cup as generative writing prompts we will explore potential visions of the future.

What you’ll need:

  • A SWANA coffee pot that can hold at least two cups of water
  • At least one demitasse coffee cup with handle and saucer
  • Sugar, if you prefer it sweet
  • Turkish ground coffee of medium roast (with cardamom or without)
  • A napkin
  • A notebook/paper and writing tools
  • A portable laptop or phone for zoom purposes (we will be moving from kitchen to writing desk)
  • A well-lit place to read and write
