Environmental Progam

The ACCESS Environmental Program promotes the right of every person to live in a clean, safe, healthy environment and community. Our work combines community education, community-based research, and advocacy for environmental health and environmental justice.  

Goals

  • Protect and improve environmental quality for the Arab American community and others in Southeastern Michigan
  • Promote awareness among Arab Americans of environmental concerns, and their impacts on health
  • Develop environmental leadership among Arab Americans, particularly among youth
  • Enhance learning, promote healthy lifestyles and encourage an appreciation of nature through outdoor programs
  • Develop a new policy in Michigan that will protect all Michigan communities, and end discrimination in environmental protection and decision-making
  • Build a stronger, more diverse environmental movement in Michigan

 Programs & Services

  • Community-based research in partnership with University of Michigan School of Public Health & UM School of Natural Resources and Environment
  • Youth Achieving Leadership and Learning About the Environment (YALLA) and other programs that promote youth leadership and environmental career development
  • ACCESS is a partner in the Southwest Detroit/South Dearborn Environmental Collaborative, a collaborative effort to reduce exposure to environmental hazards in our community
  • Bilingual (Arabic-English) environmental health educational materials, including information on asthma management, mercury contamination and fish consumption, lead poisoning, and more
  • Building Capacity Through Diversity—programs and trainings that promote a more diverse and just environmental movement

  • Advocacy to reduce environmental impacts from existing industry and proposed developments on communities in Detroit, Dearborn and Hamtramck.
  • Program staff are available for environmental consultation, environmental tours, and public speaking engagements on various topics, including :
    • Environmental conditions in the Arab American community in Southeastern Michigan
    • Environmental Justice
    • Environmental Health
    • Global Warming/Climate Change

Arab American community in Metro Detroit, and other communities affected by environmental concerns

Funding Source
Funding for the ACCESS Environmental Program is provided by a variety of sources, including private foundations and individual and corporate donations.
