ACCESS gives students chance to learn leadership skills

Throughout the month of June, 22 high school students across Wayne County participated in the Arab American Youth Leadership course at ACCESS. The course, designed and implemented by the ACCESS Youth and Education Department and Dr. Barry Checkoway of the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work, aims to empower Arab American youth with skills that support their roles as leaders within their community.

Over the course of five sessions, students actively participated in discussions surrounding social injustice and Arab youth identity. Students also improved their ability to identify and solve issues by participating in various exercises, such as creating community action plans.

In addition to workshops, students visited the Detroit Public Library, Arab American National Museum and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. During the campus tour, students met with various U-M representatives to learn about the college application process, financial aid, scholarships and ask questions about applying to college.
