ACCESS' youth basketball team, Rolling Thunder, wins league championship

This year has been an incredible experience for the Rolling Thunder youth basketball team at ACCESS. The team recently won the league championship and finished top in their season.

The team's “failure is not an option” slogan proved that hard work, determination and perseverance deserves its reward. Four youth teams competed in the playoffs: Rolling Thunder, Jordan, All Stars and Southenders. ACCESS’ Rolling Thunder team won the title after defeating the All Stars in a seven game series.

"We commend Coach Ahmed Alfaris and Coach Hamadan Muflahi for their hard work and continuous mentorship to the youth teams," said Sarah Shoucair-Chaar, academic youth and development supervisor.

Alfaris said he enjoyed coaching the team through its championship season.

“The students kept coming to the program ready to compete and excel in everything. They were very thankful for the opportunities we provided them," he said.

The players consisted of middle school and elementary students from Dearborn, Melvindale, Hamtramck and Detroit.

The ACCESS Youth and Education Department offers a variety of recreational activities, including basketball, that is open to youth of all ages. The summer basketball season has started again and youth in grades 5-8 can currently sign up.
