Survivors of Torture Program
The Survivors of Torture (SOT) Program is dedicated to helping individuals and families heal from the physical, emotional, and psychological effects of torture and severe trauma. Our goal is to restore dignity, promote resilience, reduce suffering, and support successful integration into the community through comprehensive, client-centered services.
The program serves refugees, asylum seekers, U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (green card holders), and other individuals who have experienced torture, war-related trauma, or persecution.
Who We Serve
The Survivors of Torture Program serves individuals and families who have experienced physical, emotional, psychological, or other forms of torture or persecution outside the United States. Eligible populations include:
- Refugees
- Asylum seekers
- U.S. citizens who are survivors of torture or severe trauma
- Lawful permanent residents (green card holders)
- Survivors of war, political violence, persecution, and human rights abuses
- Family members affected by a loved one's torture-related experiences
Program Services
Our comprehensive, trauma-informed services are designed to address the complex needs of survivors and their families, including:
- Individual therapy
- Family therapy
- Group therapy
- Case management
- Psychiatric services
- Trauma-informed interventions
- Psychoeducational and prevention groups
- Limited legal and immigration assistance
- Employment support and coordination
- Medical and pharmaceutical care coordination
- Hope House referrals and supportive housing resources
- Community integration and resource navigation
Program Goals
The Survivors of Torture Program strives to:
- Promote healing and recovery from the effects of torture and trauma
- Restore dignity, hope, and self-sufficiency
- Strengthening family and community connections
- Improve emotional, physical, and social well-being
- Increase access to healthcare, legal, and social services
- Support successful community integration and long-term stability
Eligibility
Services are available to individuals and families who meet the eligibility requirements established by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Eligible individuals include those who have experienced physical, emotional, mental, or psychological torture, persecution, or trauma outside the United States by a government, armed group, or other entity acting under the color of law. Family members affected by these experiences may also be eligible for services.
